Science Experiment - Which ice cube will melt faster?

Term 3 - 2020 Year 3 EALD group

In Year 3 this term we want to explore the relationship between heat and ice. We started our unit by reading the story "Our House Is On Fire" . (Teacher notes and ideas -> HERE  and HERE )

The story is about a young girl, called Greta Thunberg, that feels very strongly about some changes that are happening in the world regarding climate. The book also includes some beautiful illustrations that we looked at closely and had discussions about.

Then we read the story "The Very Hungry Bear" and we talked about how the polar bear in the photo is slowly losing his iceberg because it is melting.

Once we had shared our thoughts it was time to conduct an experiment. Our big question is "Why is the ice melting faster than usual?" as we are trying to figure out why there are rising sea levels across the world and if it is due to ice melting.

We placed 3 ice cubes in 3 different containers. One was in the shade, one was under a lamp and one was in direct sunlight. We observed them for over 1 hour to see the changes.

We will discuss our result during our next lesson and update our blog.
